In October 2005, the European Community and numerous states of South East Europe (SEE) signed the “Treaty establishing the Energy Community”. The Energy Community extends the EU internal energy market to South East Europe and beyond. The contracting parties have committed themselves to implement the relevant key EU legal acts in the area of electricity, natural gas, environment and renewable energy, to liberalise their energy market and to develop an adequate regulatory framework. But this is not the only reason for various chances and challenges for market players in one of the most exciting growth regions of Europe. Topics such as security of supply, network expansion, energy savings, investments and project development in conventional energy and renewable energy production as well as the implementation of liberalization commitments are just a few current issues in SEE.
